Hartal today in Kerala; Malappuram district spared

Malappuram district has been exempted in view of the Lok Sabha by-election campaign.

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF and the BJP will observe a state-wide dawn-to-dusk hartal on Thursday, except in Malappuram district, in protest against the police action on Jishnu Pranoy’s mother Mahija and her relatives  here on Wednesday. Malappuram district has been exempted in view of the Lok Sabha by-election campaign.

Essential services such as milk, newspapers and hospitals have also been spared  from the strike to be observed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. KPCC president M. M. Hassan, who held a  press meet in Kochi, condemned the police action and said the  hartal was against the inhuman attitude of the Left government and its police action. Senior Congress leader A. K. Antony also urged Keralites to make the hartal a success. KPCC general secretary Thampanoor Ravi asked the Congress supporters to refrain from violence and said peaceful marches will be held in all parts of the state.

BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan condemned the LDF government and said it will be washed away by the tears of Mahija, mother of Jishnu Pranoy.
