Chennai: Tension as police van knocks bike, two dead
Police chased the protesters using lathis after the crowd damaged the police vehicle and an MTC bus.
Chennai: A 16-year old boy riding a bike and his friend on the pillion were killed when the two-wheeler on which they were traveling was hit by a police vehicle near Panathope Railway Ground in Ayanavaram on Sunday afternoon.
Following the incident, relatives of the deceased staged a road roko demanding that the driver of the police vehicle be handed over to them.

Police identified the deceased as V Ram Kumar and Solomon, both residents of Ekangipuram of Otteri. The duo was pursuing plus one in a railway school in the same locality. On Sunday, they were returning home after a game of football when the incident happened.
“Ramkumar was riding Solomon’s bike and had overtaken the Tamil Nadu Special Police van. He hit a speed breaker and fell on one side when the van knocked him down. He died and his friend died in the hospital. He was driving the vehicle without licence and was not wearing a helmet,” the police said.
However, Ram Kumar's family claimed that the police van came at full speed and caused the accident. Ram Kumar's father Victor had passed away a year back. Ram Kumar is survived by his mother who works at Amma Unavagam.
Following the fatal accident the police arrested the TSP driver Ezhumalai.
