Chennai: Sharp, significant showers lashed parts of South Chennai on Monday, bringing down the maximum temperature. In contrast, Nungambakkam station which recorded the highest June temperature in three years remains parched with no rains.
However, weather experts foresee the possibility of widespread rain in the city in the next two days. “Rains were witnessed in South Chennai localities including Tambaram, Chromepet and Pallavaram due to convection activity,” said officials from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
Pradeep John, a blogger at the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, told Deccan Chronicle that the temperature in the city, which was hovering around 40 degrees, would come down from Thursday. “The city will witness widespread rains in the next two days due to convection,”he added .
Chennai’s Nungambakkam station on Monday recorded 41.1 degrees, thus marking as the hottest June in the past three years. It was a departure of 3.6 degrees from the normal June temperature. According to the data from the RMC, Monday’s temperature is second to the previous temperature of 41.8 degrees, noted on June 8, 2014.
Meenambakkam noted 41.8 degrees Celsius,but slight thunderstorms in the evening turned the area pleasant.
