When will Bellandur Lake be cleaned: Karnataka High Court to Govt
The court adjourned the matter by six weeks.
Bengaluru: Concerned over the poor condition of Bellandur Lake, the Karnataka High Court on Monday sought to know from the government when the waterbody will be cleaned.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Rajya Sabha member D. Kupendra Reddy on the protection and rejuvenation of waterbodies, especially Bellandur Lake, in Bengaluru.
Observing that Bellandur Lake is polluted and that it is required to be rejuvenated and maintained properly, the high court had earlier appointed the Principal Secretary, Department of Urban Development, and the Principal Secretary, Department of Ecology and Environment, as special officers to look into the status of the lake and take remedial measures to restore and rejuvenate it.
The officers appointed by the court have submitted that various civic bodies have presented to them short-term and long-term remedial measures.
The court-appointed committee also states that several factors have led to the pollution of the lake. Meanwhile, the state too has submitted that it is taking action with regard to relocating some of the industries operating within the catchment area of the lake.
The BWSSB has submitted its status report, stating that installation of sewage treatment plants in major valleys and other places is in process along with working on underground drainage in a phased manner. The court adjourned the matter by six weeks.
