Alkapoor Township to harvest more rainwater this monsoon
Residents of the township have already set up 168 tanks.
Hyderabad: Residents of Alkapoor Township, Manikonda will be setting up 85 rainwater harvesting pits to save all the water they can this monsoon. They already have 168 rainwater harvesting pits dug earlier over 358 acres. Prior to 2013, when the township was developing, the harvesting pits were used as garbage dumps. Alakaapoor Township resident's welfare association with help from the Gram Panchayat, started working on rejuvenating the pits.
“We are conserving water in three different ways — recharge pits, directing water to empty plots and lawns and moving roof water to sumps. The roof water is sent to a sump and then redirected to the overhead tank through a filter. The overall cost of using such conservation techniques is less,” said N Eshwara Reddy, a hydrogeogolist.
Which method is used depends on the size of the plot. Almost 80 per cent of the apartments in the township use harvested rainwater from mostly conventional open pits.
HMDA has made it mandatory to have rain water harvesting pits but this is not always followed.
HMWSSB has recognised this colony as the best colony in water conservation. Before the onset of the monsoon every year the pits are cleaned. Individual roof top tanks need maintenance once in five years.
