Hyderabad: In another shocking incident since the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2018 results were announced on Monday, an 18-year-old medical aspirant, who had appeared for the medical entrance examination, committed suicide by jumping off a high-rise building at a crowded street on Tuesday morning.

While police did not recover any suicide note, they suspect poor performance and low rank in the NEET could have prompted her to take the extreme step.

Resident of Kachiguda neighbourhood, Jasleen Kaur, was a former student of the Sri Chaitanya College in Narayanguda. She jumped from the top of the ten-storeyed Mayuri Kushal Complex on Abids street at around 10:30 am. Passers-by shouted from the road below asking Jasleen to not take such a drastic step.

She sustained head injuries and died on the spot.

“Jasleen left her Barkhatpura flat at 8:45am on her scooter, telling her family that she was heading to a gym. Around 10 am, she reached Mayuri Kushal complex. She took the stairs to reach the terrace and jumped to death,” Abids Sup-Inspector K Laxmaiah was quoted as saying. The police added that that Jasleen had secured above one lakh rank in NEET and was depressed.

After parking her two-wheeler, she climbed the stairs and reached the top floor. Some people who spotted her raised an alarm to deter her but she jumped off.

As the Abids police were trying to identify the victim after shifting her body to Osmania General Hospital for autopsy. Members of Jasleen’s family reached Kacheguda police station to lodge a missing complaint and identified the body from the visuals being played at the police station.

The CCTV footage, which has gone viral, shows the girl, in jeans and T-shirt walking up the stairs and later jumping to her death.

This is the fourth such suicide by NEET aspirant after the results were announced on Monday. Two students from Tamil Nadu, one from Villupuram and other from Tiruvannamalai, committed suicide by consuming poison after the NEET results were announced. Another boy from Delhi too committed suicide by jumping off from the eighth floor of a building.
