Bengaluru: Lung transplant helps 61-year-old patient
The patient, a Chennai resident, was said to be in a critical condition and on oxygen support.
Bengaluru: A 61-year-old patient suffering from an advanced interstitial lung disease for a prolonged period, underwent lung transplant at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals.
The surgery was performed by a team of doctors, led by Dr Sandeep Attawar, Program Director and Chair Cardiac Surgeries, Thoracic Organ Transplant on Wednesday.
The patient, a Chennai resident, was said to be in a critical condition and on oxygen support. Later, his condition deteriorated and the patient was put on non-invasive ventilator.
Fortunately, there was an alert for organ donation in Mysuru. A team doctors from BGS hospital swung into action and transported the patient from Chennai to Bengaluru in a fully equipped ventilator ambulance on Tuesday.
The ambulance started at 9 pm and reached BGS hospital at 1.30 am.
Simultaneously, a team of doctors harvested the lungs from the donor in Mysuru and a green corridor was created by the police. The organ was transported to the hospital (a distance of 150 km) in less than 90 minutes. A team headed by Dr Govini Balasubramani and Dr Bhaskar B.V. successfully harvested the organ.
After the arrival of the organ at BGS hospital, a team of doctors successfully performed the bilateral lung transplant.
Apart from Dr Attawar, Dr Prabhat Dutta, Chief Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and Dr Vijil Rahulan, HOD, Transplant Pulmonology and Advanced Critical Care were also part of the team.
The patient is recovering but will be kept under observation for a few days.
