Chennai: Toddler falls into water bucket, dies

Chennai: A 11-month-old girl died as she slipped and fell into a partially-filled bucket of water, in Mylapore on Thursday evening.

According to sources, the child, Dhanuskha, was struggling to breathe after she was lifted out of the bucket, and died while she was being rushed to a local private hospital. The child’s father, Vimal (25), a resident of Ganeshapuram in Mylapore, works as a gardener at a DMK MP’s residence, sources said. The child’ mother was involved in some work when the accident took place, around 5.30 pm, said police.

It is said Vimal was washing clothes, and he had filled two buckets of water to rinse the clothes. The child had accidentally fallen inside one of the buckets.

Vimal rushed the child to a private hospital nearby, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, said a police officer, adding the  incident was reported to them by hospital  authorities.

Police said that water had entered the child’s lungs. Police sent the body to the Rajiv Gandhi government hospital for post-mortem.

The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy on Friday.
