CM orders relief work in Dakshina Kannada districts

Mangaluru: In the wake of heavy rainfall in the coastal region of the state over the past three days, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah instructed the officials to take immediate relief measures for the damage caused by rain in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts.

The relentless rain persisting for three consecutive days has resulted in a flood-like situation in various locations. Several houses have also been damaged and four individuals have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the last two days.

Responding to the situation, CM Siddaramaiah instructed the district in-charge ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, and Mankal Vaidya to visit their respective districts and take stock of the situation.

Upon receiving reports from the chief secretary detailing the impact of the rainfall, the Chief Minister promptly instructed officials to gear up for immediate relief efforts.

According to officials four people died and about 20 houses partially damaged due to heavy rain in Coastal Karnataka districts in the last two days.

Dinakar Shetty (53) of Ulthur in Kundapur taluk who was driving a bike skid and fell into the waterbody nearby and died on July 4 night. Sheshadri Aithal (73) of Yadamoge of the same Taluk fell into the stream while crossing a footbridge and lost his life.

In Dakshina Kannada Suresh Gatty (53) of Someshwar village fell into the stream and died when he was crossing it on July 4 evening. The district administration has paid a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to his family members.
Santhosh (34) of Kulai village died due to electrocution when he came into contact of a live wire that had fallen near Kulai.

As many as 15 houses were partially damaged in Udupi, one in Dakshina Kannada district. In Uttara Kannada district 3 houses have been severely damaged and 1 partially damaged. A rehabilitation center has been opened at Government Primary School, Handigon in Uttara Kannada district. Six people have taken shelter there.

Due to the heavy rain and rain forecast holiday has been declared for all schools, PU Colleges, and government-aided and private institutions in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on July 6. Uttara Kannada district has declared a holiday for schools and PU Colleges in Coastal Taluks.
