JNTUK to install its own Wi-Fi facility
JNTUK to reject Union Government's Internet connectivity plan due to delays.
Kakinada: Spurning the offer of the Central Government to provide WiFi connectivity, the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK) is going ahead with a plan to bring the connectivity to University and University College of Engineering Kakinada (UCEK) campuses on their own. According to University sources, the Central government has chosen JNTUK of one among the three universities in the country to provide WiFi connectivity to the students as a model.
A team surveyed the University for giving WiFi connectivity and submitted a project report to the Central Government. The JNTUK has also expressed happiness over the Centre’s decision for choosing the University and gave its nod for the facility. But till now there is no headway in the project. Meanwhile, the University introduced online courses and the state government, led by the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is promoting paperless administration along with the online courses.
“The University has established a Research Innovation Centre also. “For all these projects, uninterrupted WiFi services should be available in the University campuses,” said an official of JNTUK. Already, internet connectivity has been provided by BSNL ten years back to the University. But the underground cable wiring has been damaged during the construction of new buildings.
At present some of the departments and hostels are being provided WiFi and internet services in the UCEK. “We are going further to provide full fledged WiFi services,” said the UCEK Principal V.Ramachandra Raju. He said they want quality services to get sophisticated technology for the students and also the faculty. Meanwhile, the Finance Committee of the University approved Rs 3.20 crore for the WiFi facility project and it should be accepted by the University Executive Council meeting to be held on August 9. Already Shell Networks, Micro Care, Laser Computers and others are coming forward to compete the hardware bids. After taking executive council’s nod, tenders will be invited for WiFi connectivity.
