Mahadayi row: ADGP promises to review cases

Hubballi: Additional director general of police (ADGP), Raghavendra Auradkar, who began his investigation into the violence that broke out during the Mahadayi stir and the police action taken to contain it, reviewed cases filed against the agitators and inspected government offices set on fire by protesters on July 28, on Friday.
Mr Auradkar assured Yamanur villagers that cases filed against the old, women and students would be scruitinised and a decision taken on dropping the charges against them after a thorough study of the video footage of the violence.
Senior police officer Kamal Panth would, meanwhile, visit the village to look into the alleged police assault on women and others in their homes, he promised.
Interestingly, Yamanur Gram Panchayat member, Vijaykumar Hallikeri, protested against the suspension of the Navalgund circle police inspector and sub-inspector, saying they were not present when the police lathicharged villagers.

Deputy commissioner S B Bommanahalli also visited homes in Yamanur village along with the local tahasildar to study the injuries suffered by farmers and women during the alleged police assault. Members of several pro-Kannada organisations descended on the village as well and heard the grievances of the injured farmers.
Kannada activist, Vatal Nagaraj threatened to stage a dharna in front of the Ballari jail from August 9 if the arrested farmers were not released.
