Kakinada: Floods force people to remain in darkness

KAKINADA: Godavari River continued to receive flood water on Monday too and all the flood-hit villages are facing inundation. Many people in the flood hit villages have living in dark due to power cuts.
The electricity officials cut the power supply, as a precautionary step, in view of the floods. Due to receding flood waters, the Irrigation Officials withdrew the second warning. But, the flood water-levels have been slowly increasing again on Monday night.
On Monday morning, 12.70 lakh cusecs of water was discharged in to sea at Dowleswaram by lifting 175 gates and by evening, 10.70 lakh cusecs of water got discharged. But, later, the officials said that the flood-levels have been increasing slowly and it may increase further by Tuesday.
Deputy Chief Ministers Pilli Subhashchandra Bose, Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas (Nani) and agriculture minister Kurasala Kannababu, social welfare minister Pinepe Viswaroop and others visited flood-hit villages at Veeravaram and Musurumilli villages in Devipatnam mandal. They visited the relief camp in Ashram School at Musurumilli village and inquired about the supply of food and relief measures.
They also visited medical camps and suggested the officials concerned to extend medical services to the needy through 104 mobile services. Mr Bose said that the villages were affected by the floods due to construction of cofferdam in Polavaram project and this should not have happened. He felt that after completing resettlement and rehabilitation packages, the project would have been taken up. He instructed the officials concerned to take up sanitation programme to avoid spread of contagious diseases.
According to officials concerned, flood relief measures have been continuing. They said that 17,737 houses have been marooned in East and West Godavari districts and eight houses have been damaged due to floods. 18,610 persons were shifted to 77 relief camps and 125 medical camps have been organised in East Godavari district.
District collector D. Muralidhar Reddy said that SDRF and NDRF teams are engaging in rendering assistance to the flood victims.
