Maharashtra waters wreak havoc in Bagalkote

Hubballi: The flood situation continued to remain grave in north Karnataka on Monday with release of more water from Koyna dam in Maharashtra owing to torrential rain in the neighbouring state.

The outflow from Koyna dam was more than 90 thousand cusecs with Almatti reservoir receiving 2,45,256 cusecs water. Therefore, officials have released 3,03,525 cusecs to maintain the storage level of 517.87 meters to prevent backwaters from affecting the villages situated on the banks of Krishna river in Bagalkot and Vijayapur districts.

The prospect of a flood will increase in upper riparian places of Hipparagi and Narayanpur reservoir if there is more rainfall in the basins of tributaries of Vedaganga, Dodhganga.

Problems of people in several villages has worsened with flow of more water in Krishna river in Belagavi district.

The government school was partially submerged in Kallol village and water likely to enter the village within next few hours. Hundreds of transformers are also submerged in the water in Chikkodi taluk and officials have stopped the power supply as precautionary measures.  The water has also entered into the petrol bunk in Dattawada and other villages forcing the people to run from pillar to post to buy petrol.

Chikkapadasalagi barrage in Jamkhandi taluk is almost submerged in the flood water, prompting officials to suspend the movement of vehicles on state highway number-34 between Hubballi and Vijayapur. Jamkhandi tahsildar P S Chanagond has imposed prohibitory orders surrounding the barrage and nearby bridge until August 8 to prevent vehicular movement.

This has caused severe inconvenience to villagers who visit Jamkhandi town for business activities. The administration has declared three day holiday for schools in flood affected Nandagaon in Mudhol taluk, Muttur and Tubachi villages in Jamkhandi taluk. The bridge between Banahatti town and Halingali village has also submerged.
