Kochi: Brace for adventure sports, adrenalin rush
Munambam to be hub of water sports; Bhootathankettu set as adventure tourism destination.
Kochi: Be ready for some adrenaline rush this Onam as the state is set to become a major destination for water sports and adventure tourism activities.
While Munambam in Ernakulam region will be a hub of exhilarating water sport activities -- from wind surfing, jet skiing to banana boats and Kayaking, the Tourism department is developing Bhootathankettu, also in the district, as a major adventure tourism destination.
"We're launching a range of beach water sports at Munambam in tie-up with the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council. We'll start the activities on September 8 and extend the facilities on a permanent basis. Tourists can also enjoy Dive Park, Self-Kitchen Model and Sand Crafting there," said Mesh Manoharan, Founder of Neptune Water Sports, which won the bidding for Licensed Operator held by the DTPC the other day.
Now water sport enthusiasts from the state could enjoy all activities that are available in Goan beaches.
"We're providing wind surfing, catamaran sailing, jet-skiing, speed boat, banana rides, bumper rides and kayaking. We've been involved in training in these water sports for the last three years and have well-trained staff. Besides, insurance coverage is being provided to riders," he said.
While basic facilities like toilets and parking facilities have been set up, the location will be formally handed over to the Group on September 8 when Vypeen MLA S. Sarma inaugurates DTPC's Onam celebrations at Munambam beach. The Dive Park will be set up on Build-Operate and Transfer (BoT) basis and handed over to the DTPC in the future.
A 'Self-Kitchen Model' programme will be introduced in another two months under which tourists can experience live fishing. Small groups can cook food with the locally available procurements (fish, chicken) with the help of local cooks.
Meanwhile, the tourism department aims to promote Bhootathankettu as a major adventure tourism destination. A 'Four-wheeler Mud Race' will be held there in which over 50 participants with altered vehicles will participate.
"The 1.5 km track is just before the dam and consists of rocks and slush, providing for one of the best terrain for this sort of sports. The winners will take away a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh. We aim to hold events like 'Slush Fest' on a regular basis here," said A.V. Rajesh, Programme Co-ordinator and Pindimana block panchayat member.
