KALABURAGI: Yadagir district authorities have sounded a red alert following heavy release of water from the Basavasagar Reservoir at Narayanapura, across the river Krishna.

Basavasagar and the upstream Almatti reservoirs are recording heavy inflow in view of heavy rains in Belagavi district and also in many parts of Maharashtra. At around 3 pm on Thursday, the authorities released 1.759 lakh cusecs of water from the 17 gates of the reservoir, which is likely to go up by Friday.

Some villages on the banks of the river would be inundated if the water level crosses two lakh cusec, which is most likely by Friday morning. The flood water has already posed a threat to Shellagi, Devapura, Yakshachinti, Gauduru and Kauluru villages. The main bridge at Kauluru near Devadurga town which provides connectivity between Kalaburagi and parts of Yadagir districts with Raichur district is likely to be submerged if the water release crosses two lakh cusecs. In the month of August, road connectivity was severed for nearly a fortnight in view of the submergence of this low lying bridge.  Hence  traffic had to be diverted via Tintini in Devadurga taluk. According to sources, water has submerged hundreds of acres of land in Surpur and Devadurga taluks. Officials have rushed to villages to help undertake relief measures. They have also initiated measures to shift the affected people to safer places. The storage in the dam stood at 31.28 tmcft as against its full capacity of 33.315 tmcft.
