Bengaluru: A 19-year-old student drowned after he went for a swim in a quarry at Doddenahalli in Kothanur police station limits on Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Akhilanath, who hailed from Kerala. He was a third semester Bachelor of Business Administration student at Kristu Jayanti College at K. Narayanapura in Kothanur and was staying in the college hostel.

According to the police, Akhilanath along with three of his female friends, who also hailed from Kerala and studied in the same college, had gone for an excursion, as it was a holiday. In the morning, they went near quarries at Doddenahalli, where they clicked several photographs. As it has been raining from the last couple of days, the quarries were filled with water.

“Akhilanath told his friends that he will swim for a while, but they asked him not to take risk as the quarry was deep. However, he did not pay heed and ventured into the quarry. After swimming for a while, he started drowning. On seeing it, the girls started screaming for help and before anyone came to his rescue he drowned. Later, the rescue personnel from the Fire & Emergency Department rushed to the spot and fished out his body,” the police said.
