Mid-day meals for Bengaluru's poor people soon
According to the sources, this scheme will be implemented as part of the Right to Food Act, 2013.
Bengaluru: Soon those city dwellers who can't afford a meal per day in can avail for a mid-day meal scheme in the various parts of the city.
This novel scheme launched by the BBMP in association with Akshaya Patra Foundation is expected to help lakhs of people from economically weaker sections.
According to the sources, this scheme will be implemented as part of the Right to Food Act, 2013. "This proposal was originally mooted along with the mid-day meal scheme for pourakarmikas," sources said.
BBMP officials said the Akshaya Patra was already engaged is providing free meal for thousands of senior citizens across the city. "Now this scheme will be implemented jointly by the foundation and BBMP. We want mid-day meal centres in various parts of the city like railway stations to ensure that those who can't afford a meal per day will be supplied quality meal," he said.
The BBMP officials said they chose Akshaya Patra because they have the infrastructure as well as expertise and a proven track record in supplying meals to lakhs of students in the city. "To ensure that project will be implemented successfully we will join hands with the foundation. Ideally we want to launch this scheme on November 8, along with the free mid-day meal for pourakarmiakas," an official said.
