Tiruvalluvar statue desecration: protests continue in Thanjavur

THANJAVUR: Demonstrations by political party members continued before Tiruvalluvar statue at Pillaiyarpatti near Thanjavur on Tuesday demanding the arrest of those who desecrated the statue on Sunday night.
Members of Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) led by Amarsingh, Thanjavur district secretary of DK led the agitation. They demanded arrest of the culprits and said that 'saffronisation of Tiruvalluvar' should not be done. Members of Naam Thamizhar Katchi also staged a demonstration demanding the arrest of those involved in the desecration.
Meanwhile, members of BJP led by Karruppu Muruganandam, state general secretary of BJP, performed milk ‘abishekam’ to the statue on Tuesday. They also demanded the arrest of persons involved in the desecration.
Muruganandam later told presspersons that a wrong impression was given by speakers of various political parties that the BJP was behind the desecration. “When Prime Minister Narendra Modi is speaking about Tiruvalluvar and Tirukural in world forums and propagate it, why should BJP desecrate the saint’s statue. We respect Tiruvalluvar and Tirukural,”
