Kochi: 402 cases booked for waste in water
The Chief Minister also promised to take necessary measures to resolve hurdles if any in realising the proposed waste to energy plant at Brahmapuram.
Kochi: As many as 402 cases have been registered in different police stations of Ernakulam district this year for dumping garbage in water sources.
A total of 459 persons have been arrested and 173 vehicles were taken into custody. Legal action has been initiated against vehicle owners, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the Assembly session.
He was replying to the submission raised by legislator P.T. Thomas in the Assembly. Police register cases against waste dumpers in water sources, wetlands and open spaces as per IPC, Kerala Police Act, Kerala Municipal Act and Kerala Panchayat Raj Act.

“The government has taken series of measures to prevent sewage and solid waste dumping in water sources and populated areas. Surveillance cameras have been installed at various places with the support of residents’ associations. Surveillance is also being done by highway patrolling, Spider patrolling and station mobile teams. The state police chief has given instruction to all police stations to cooperate with the activities of Suchitwa Mission,” the Chief Minister added.
Mr P.T Thomas raised the submission in the wake of increasing incidence of waste dumping in Thrikkakara and nearby areas. Waste dumping is rampant in water sources and deserted areas along Seaport–Airport Road.
