Thiruvananthapuram: Auto, taxi fares to go up

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has approved a hike in the fares of autorickshaws and taxis. The cabinet meeting on Wednesday took the decision to increase the minimum fares of autos from '20 to '25 and taxis from '150 to Rs 175.

A formal announcement is likely to be made in the Assembly on Thursday, it is learnt.

The Justice Ramachandran Nair committee appointed by the state government had recommended that the minimum fare for autorickshaws may be hiked from Rs 20 to Rs 30 and that of taxis from Rs 150 to Rs 200.

The minimum distance will remain at 1.5 kilometres for autorickshaws and 5 km for taxis. The committee also recommended that the autorickshaw fare for every one kilometre after the minimum distance may be increased to Rs 12.
