Chennai: Priya, a 23-year-old pregnant woman from Thenambakkam village in Kancheepuram, hung herself to death from the fan in her bedroom on Thursday. She was seven months pregnant at the time of the incident.

According to sources, Priya married Manikandan (28) around seven months back, after having been in a relationship with him for some time. Since the couple belonged to different castes, they faced stiff opposition from both their families, especially from Manikandan's. After their wedding, while Manikandan continued to work for a private firm at Sriperumbudur, Priya stayed home. However, all was not well between Priya and Manikandan's mother and the duo reportedly got into fights quite often, said a source.

Eventually, Priya became pregnant and her baby shower was scheduled to take place on Friday.

On Thursday morning, when Manikandan returned home after a walk, he found his bedroom locked. When Priya failed to respond to his calls to open the door, Manikandan broke the door open. To his horror, he saw his wife, seven months pregnant at the time, hanging from the ceiling fan.

However, neighbours and Priya’s family refused to believe that it was a case of suicide and have demanded that police probe into the matter. Following this, Priya's body was sent to Kancheepuram government hospital for post-mortem. Kanchipuram district sub-collector has now ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter. Manikandan and his mother are presently being interrogated by the police.
