Hyderabad: A cordon and search operation was carried out by the North Zone police on Monday night. The residents were irked as the cops woke them up and demanded licences, Aadhaar and other credentials during the late night. The operation was held at Koya Basti, LB Nagar, Gangaputra Sangam.

“They come in with full force, asking for our ID proofs during late night which disturbed our sleep. I wonder if this is legal and not,” said Rakesh Mehta, a resident of Bowenpally.

“Around 450 policemen, including three assistant commissioners, 23 inspectors, 46 sub-inspectors, two special parties, two armed reserve forces, two women platoons and the deputy commissioner of police, were involved in the operation,” said officials from North Zone.

A total of 280 houses were checked and 42 suspects were taken into custody for verification. “Twenty-three vehicles, including two cars and 21 bikes, were seized. The search operation was held in the areas where the mixed population exists and migrated peoples from UP, Bihar and Maharashtra stay. The operation started at 10 pm and was completed by 1:30 am,” said B. Sumathi, North Zone DCP.

When the initiative was launched in 2015 some alleged it violated the constitutional rights of citizens. Some of the residents claimed that the police should not brand some places as ‘criminal areas’.
