19 speed bumps on 'Secunderabad Cantonment' road will rattle your bones
Residents allege guidelines not followed on 3.3-km stretch.
Hyderabad: A road in the Secunderabad Cantonment has 19 speed breakers on a 3.8-km stretch from Allahabad Gate in East Marredpally to the RK Puram flyover, according to the Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS).
Residents say that these speed breakers are unusually big, and result in a very uncomfortable ride even at low speeds. Transport experts said that most speed breakers are built without following the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress (IRC).
This road is used by the GHMC’s garbage-carrying trucks bound for the Jawaharnagar dump yard, and heavy vehicles carrying machinery to the industrial area in ECIL. If these vehicles stall suddenly at the speed-breaker, it affects those following behind.
Mr C.S. Chandrashekar, a Sainikpuri resident and FNECS member, who counted the speed breakers, said, “They are posing a threat to senior citizens and two-wheeler riders. Though there are no major accidents, people skid at the speed breakers, especially the double speed breakers near the RK Puram flyover.”
Some two-wheeler riders carrying children are said to prefer to get down from their vehicles and walk across the speed breakers because of the risks,
The speed breakers are not painted in black and white stripes and not visible at night because of the lack of proper street lighting. Recently, a person met with an accident near the Allahabad Gate due to poor visibility.
Mr Vinod Kanumala, chairman, Indian Federation of Road Safety, said, “Speed breakers should be installed as per the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress. Only a few in the city are in accordance with the rules, that too in the HiTec City region. The rest flout the rules.”
According to the IRC, a speed-breaker should be formed by a rounded hump 0.10-metre high and 3.7-metere wide with a
1.5-metre ramp on both sides. They should be marked with alternate black and white paint and for better visibility at night luminous paint should be used. The authority concerned should maintain the speed breakers at regular intervals.
