The woman jumped from a moving electric train into Cooum river, her family is accusing the husband of dowry harassment.
Chennai: A 25-year-old woman, a physician’s assistant at a private hospital in Vanagaram, committed suicide by jumping into Cooum river from a moving train near Saidapet last Saturday. Family and friends of the victim now allege that dowry harassment by her husband led to the woman taking the extreme step.
Incidentally, it was the first birthday of the couple's child on Monday and they had argued over the guest list on Saturday after which the woman took the extreme step, according to police sources. The victim was identified as R. Jeevitha. She was married to M. Rose, a human resources manager with a software firm and the couple stayed at Pattabiram near Avadi. The couple got married over a year ago and have a child.
Preliminary investigations have suggested that the two had disputes for quite a while now over the man's alleged relationship with a colleague. On Saturday, he had dropped his wife at the hospital after which she had taken the suburban train towards Tambaram and jumped when the train was crossing Saidapet and Guindy.
Jeevitha had called her mother and informed her of her decision before taking the plunge. Fire and rescue service personnel fished out her body and moved it to the hospital for autopsy. Mambalam GRP have registered a case and are investigating. Police have also recommended for an enquiry by Revenue Divisional Officer.
