Kollam 1st district in India to certify most food outlets

The food safety department has provided registrations and licences to over 90% establishments functioning in food.

Kollam: In a fabulous achievement to ensure food safety, Kollam district has become the first complete food safety district in the country. 

The food safety department has provided registrations and licences to over 90% establishments functioning in food production and supply chain in the district, bagging the achievement. 

The announcement of the same will be done by minister for health and food safety, K.K. Shylaja at a function to be convened on March 19. 

The department has till date distributed registration and licence to some 29,000 odd entrepreneurs in the field of food chain. The procedures to provide registration to rest of the establishment are under progress. 

The establishments including bakeries, auditoriums, hospitals, scho-ols, food donation centers, hostels, and institutions under beverages corporation have been included in the list to attain complete food safety. 

The ice plants in fisheries sector and the cashew factories in the districts were also brought under food safety licencing. The department has convened as many as 29 registration-licencing melas across the district in the past two months to make the effort fool proof. Some 9,500 new entrepreneurs in the district could be directly brought under the food safety norms, said food safety assistant commissioner K. Ajith Kumar.
