Hyderabad: Nine months into her marriage, Segyam Sandhya of Thorrur town in Mahbubabad district was found dead with a deep gash on her neck in her apartment in Memphis city in Tennessee state in the US, local police said on Friday.
Her family back in India alleged that she was murdered by her husband D. Srikanth.
According to Sandhya’s father S. Mahender, 50, a head constable at Narsimhulapet police station, Srikanth was Sandhya’s cousin on the mother’s side.
He said that Srikanth had first proposed marriage with Sandhya but it fell through due to a quarel in the family. He left for the US but returned later and proposed again to marry Sandhya.
“He convinced us and we got them married and they left for Memphis. Sandhya never spoke of any trouble in her marriage for first six months,” Mr Mahender said. “From February, she began complaining of harassment by Srikanth and his mother D. Vijaya who is staying with them,” he alleged.
“Sandhya informed that she was harassed for dowry. Her husband and mother-in-law demanded Rs 1 crore.” the father alleged.
According to the family members, Srikanth threatened to kill Sandhya if she failed to arrange for the money.
Her family back in India convinced her to stay with Srikanth and assured her that they would sort out the issue with Srikanth.
