Chennai: Woman gets life for poisoning daughter

Since her daughter could be a problem for her second marriage, she decided to kill her, police said.

Erode: A woman was awarded life sentence by a court here on Friday for murdering her daughter. According to police, Velliangiri, native of Kedarai near Nambiyur in Erode district was a driver and he married Shobana in 2009.

The couple was living in Chennai and they have a daughter Krishnapriya. Following family dispute, they separated and Velliangiri returned to his native village. In 2015, Shobana returned to Nambiyur along with her five-year-old daughter and she was living alone in a rented house. Meanwhile, she developed a love affair with a local resident and he wanted to marry her.

Since her daughter could be a problem for her second marriage, she decided to kill her, police said. During June 2015, she murdered Krishnapriya by giving her food mixed with poison. Later Velliangiri buried the body after the last rites. But he grew suspicious over the child’s death following tip-off from the neighbours and he lodged a complaint with the Nambiyur police.Based on the complaint, the Nambiyur police registered a case and exhumed the body for post-mortem.

The medical report revealed that the child was murdered by poisoning and police arrested Shobana.The trial of the case was concluded at the Erode Mahila Court and she was convicted for the murder.

In his judgement on Friday, the magistrate N Thirunavukkarasu awarded life sentence to the accused woman and slapped Rs 10,000 as fine on her. Following the judgment, she was lodged in prison.
