Chennai: A woman constable who was on night patrol and engaged in vehicle check in the Seethammal Colony in Teynampet was allegedly roughed up by a group of men claiming to be lawyers who arrived there in a car after she stopped two drunken men on a bike.

The incident happened around 10.15 pm when she stopped the bike (TN 07 CA 8347) carrying two drunken men on I Street in Seethammal Colony. The men on the bike immediately called somebody on their mobile and within minutes, a gang arrived in a car and roughed up woman constable Priya Mary for stopping the two-wheeler riders and asking for documents.

The men reportedly made sure that the bikers were released by police and went away after manhandling the woman cop. Later the police registered a case under provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and also IPC sections for criminal intimidation, use of an obscene word and preventing a government official from discharging their duties. Sources said that the male colleagues present at the scene did not do much when the gang was intimidating the woman cop.

They just tried to pacify the unruly men who claimed to be lawyers and failed to stop them from threatening their woman colleague. Only on Saturday, the higher ups decided to register the case. Teynampet police said that they have begun hunting for the offenders.
