Hyderabad: Citizens celebrating Raahgiri, the car-free day during weekends in IT corridor, will have scope for extending this for all days at many of the Metro Rail stations once they are operational.

Wherever space is available, the HMRL is creating facilities for Raahgiri, pedestrian zones, and walking tracks for morning walkers. All the 62 metro stations will have bike-stations apart from 338 feeder stations for bikes. These bike stations will have at least 10,000 bicycles.

HMRL managing director N.V.S. Reddy said techies could rent a bike at Hi-Tech City Metro Rail station to reach their office and could return it at the end of the day’s work.

“Each station will have four to five feeder stations. Not just techies, others can also participate in an everyday Raahgiri. We are designing stations with eco-friendly vehicle space like e-bikes, e-auto-rickshaws and e-cars,” he said.
In order to discourage vehicles that pollute the air, Mr. Reddy said, “We have tied up with RTC for a single-card system for both RTC buses and Metro Rails. We are also planning to connect this with MMTS rails. Commuters can get the passes even at banks,” he said.

HMRL is developing bicycle tracks, yoga, jogging and other facilities to the public at Metro stations. Those who stay nearby can walk in for exercises. At Uppal and Miyapur stations, these services are already in place.
