Hyderabad: The absence of a ceiling fan at home claimed the life of a seven-year-old boy in Gachibowli in the wee hours of Saturday.

The incident occurred when a speeding water tanker ran amok and hit the boy and his family who were sleeping outside their room in a gated community.

Police said A. Raju, hailing from East Godavari district, was working as a watchman in Pearl Village villas in Majeedbanda village under Gachibowli police station limits. He was staying in a room given to him on the premises with his wife Lakshmi, son Babu and daughter Veera Shivamani.

As their room did not have a ceiling fan the family slept outside everyday by the side of the road inside the campus. On Friday night also they slept by the roadside as usual.

Meanwhile, at around 4 am on Saturday, a private water tanker came into the campus to fill the underground sump.

As the tanker was moving fast the driver Mahadevappa did not see the persons sleeping by the roadside and ran over them, police said.

Babu was killed on the spot as the vehicle crushed his head, Sivamani’s right leg was crushed and Raju’s leg was broken. Lakshmi suffered a severe head injury.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital and their condition is critical.

Based on a complaint from Lakshmi’s sister V. Singaram, police registered a case of accidental death and inflicting injuries and detained the tanker driver.
