Chennai: In the wake of over half-a-dozen train robberies in Mavelipalayam stretch near Sankagiri of the Salem-Erode section of southern railway over the last two days, the railways top-most police officials, DGP Sailendra Babu and DIG Balakrishnan on Monday constituted five police special teams to quickly nab the culprits who have daringly snatched chains in the dead of night from several passengers of different trains that slow down in that section due to ROB works.

Both Mr. Sailendra Babu and Mr. Balakrishnan visited the spot along with other police officials and then held discussions with security and other officials, and issued instructions on quickly bringing the culprits to book. While more than 300 policemen have been posted at the vulnerable spot where the civil works are going on, the officers quickly ensured that armed railway policemen are deployed in all trains in the Salem-Erode section. Two policemen for every 100-feet of that stretch are now being patrolled until the bridge construction work is over.

The railway police  have thrown a huge dragnet to nab the robbers whom they suspect could be from North India, including taking finger prints of suspicious-looking persons and migrant workers in the areas proximate to the crime-scene.
