Thiruvananthapuram: Two persons have been admitted to Trivandrum Medical College Hospital with suspected symptoms of Nipah.

The patients were admitted to the medical college after prolonged fever which was not subsiding despite medication. A 18-year-old youth from Kadakkal in Kollam and a 19-year-old resident of Kalliyoor in Thiruvananthapuram have been shifted to the isolation ward.

The swabs collected from the patients were sent to Virology laboratory in Alappuzha in the wake of suspected cases of Nipah being reported in the state.

One of the patients had vomiting, severe headache along with fever. However, the general health condition of the patients is better, according to health officials.

Meanwhile, the health department has issued comprehensive guidelines on handling people with suspected Nipah infection and to ensure protection of all other patients.

Health minister K.K. Shailaja said directions have been issued to hospitals to shift people with acute symptoms to isolation ward. In the event of the laboratory test report being negative, the patients will not be discharged from hospital right away. They will be kept under observation for a couple of days.
