The 190 AH inverter cost him Rs 18,000 and came with a 24-period warranty period. By January, the equipment started malfunctioning due to the poor condition of the batteries.

HYDERABAD: The consumer forum has directed New India Gas Services to compensate West Marredpally, Hyderabad resident Pavan Kumar Reddy for supplying him with a defective inverter.

Mr Reddy had purchased the inverter on October 4, 2012, for his village in Mahbubnagar which during those days was plagued by power cuts.

The 190 AH inverter cost him Rs 18,000 and came with a 24-period warranty period. By January, the equipment started malfunctioning due to the poor condition of the batteries.

Mr Reddy stated that he was sold a defective piece and the company refused to pay heed to his repeated complaints.

He had to travel back and forth while filing complaints but it did not yield results.

Mr Reddy told the forum that he went through mental agony as the purpose of buying the UPS was not fulfilled.

The forum noted that since the 190 AH inverter  was in its warranty period, it should have been changed. Selling a defective piece and ignoring a customer’s complaint was unfair trade practice.

The forum said it was common for companies to sell defective pieces that are sent back during exchange offers.

That is why most of the products do not last till the warranty period.

The forum noted that Mr Reddy had the documents to prove that the inverter was within the warranty period and proof of his complaints.

The consumer forum directed New India Gas Services to refund the Rs 18,000 it was paid for the inverter.

It also asked to pay Mr Reddy Rs 5,000 as compensation and Rs 1,000 as costs.
