Stalin, Ramadoss hail Christian Medical College's move to suspend medical admissions

Chennai: DMK working president Stalin and PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Wednesday hailed the decision of Christian Medical College in Vellore to stop the medical admissions and stop all the medical courses this year.

Stalin said the 100-year-old prestigious institution had said they were running a medical college only to create doctors who could serve the poor in backward regions and such students could not be selected by Neet. It had refused to fill the 100 MBBS seats and 60 higher medical courses, he said.

Stalin said the suspension of medical courses in the 100-year-old prestigious institution was due to the imposing of Neet by the centre. He pointed out that CMC was a party which appealed against Neet in the Supreme Court in 2013 when the apex court gave a judgment against Neet. He said Neet examination should be cancelled and education should be removed from the concurrent list and retained in the state list.

Ramadoss described the decision as a bold move and urged medical colleges in the state to follow the example. The medical college had opposed deciding the merit of students based on marks and said it would select the medical course candidates based on commitment to service and leadership qualities.

Those reasons would apply for all the government medical colleges since rural students would come forward to provide medical service in their areas. The medical admission system followed till now had strengthened rural healthcare and so it should continue.

Ramadoss said Tamil Nadu government should protest in a similar way to protect its healthcare system. Action should be taken to expedite the case in Supreme Court against Neet and till the judgment each state should be allowed to decide its own system of admissions, he said.
