According to the data of the agriculture department, banana cultivation is spread across 8,000 hectares in the district.

Salem: More than 50,000 banana plantations worth about Rs 3 crore were damaged in heavy winds that swept through Mohanur area in Namakkal district on Tuesday night.

The banana crops, spread over in an area of 50 acres, had crumbled in heavy winds that accompanied the good downpour for over one hour in Mohanur, Oruvandur, Kumaripalayam and Sangarampalayam villages. Also betel plants nurtured in around ten acres were damaged in the gusty winds.

Heavy winds also led to around 20 electric posts falling off, triggering power cuts. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board department staff is working round the clock to set right the damaged posts. Villagers said that this is the first time in around 75 years that they have been witnessing such heavy winds.

The affected farmers sought the Agriculture, Revenue and Survey departments to examine the extent of loss and pay due compensation. The loss was even more profound as it has happened ahead of the 'Ayudha puja', when banana crops would fetch a good price for the farmers.
