Nizamabad: Shortage of urea is adversely affecting farmers in Nizamabad district. For the past week, they are making the rounds of the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) to get two bags of urea per head.

Putting either their Aadhaar cards or footwear in the queues, they are waiting for urea for hours.

Ms Laxmi, a farmer of Dharpally mandal headquarters, said she had been queuing up in front of the PACS early for four days but had not been able to get urea. “My children's studies, caring for the elders and home and tending to animals in the fields have all gone out of gear,” she said.

The government should supply at least 10 bags of urea to each farmer immediately, she said. If the delay in supply of urea continued, crops will be destroyed.

District agriculture officer M. Govind said there was no need to worry about urea. Due to a transport transit problem, the supply is delayed, he said. Farmers can use complex fertilisers along with urea, he suggested.

Replying to a question Mr Govind said that of 60,500 metric tonnes which is the requirement, 39,220 MTs had been supplied so far.

The 105 PACS in the district are supplying one or two bags of urea. Agita-tions for urea continued on Friday across the district.
