Vijayawada: Social activist Medha Patkar on Thursday lambasted the state and Central governments for promoting sale of liquor, stating that it was as good as killing its own citizens.

On way from Kanyakumari to Bhopal as part of campaign Nasha Mukth Bharat Andolan, Ms Patkar reached Vijayawada on Thursday.

To mark Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, she and several other social activists had started NMBA to create awareness among the public and to start dialogue with the governments to come out with a positive policy framework on banning all forms of liquor.

Ms Patkar said that the AP Chief Minister was among the leaders of various state and Union governments who say that they cannot run schools, colleges and hospitals without revenue generated from sale of alcohol and ID liquor.

She alleged that the Chief Minister was the reason for increase in the sale of liquor and AP needed very strong social movements to enforce prohibition. She said neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Mr Naidu have respect for the judiciary.
