Chennai to get occasional spells of rain

CHENNAI: The bright sunshine on Sunday brought some relief to the inundated areas in the city, but short spells of rain followed on Monday morning. Meanwhile, the regional weather office forecast more rains in southern Tamil Nadu and parts of Puducherry. Some parts of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram district got good rains from Sunday night and early morning spells from the rainfall ending 8.30 am on Monday, prompting government to declare holidays for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur.
“Rain or thundershower is likely to occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and at a few places over interior Tamilnadu. Wind circulation and low pressure formed over Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka indicates that Chennai is to see short spells of rain till Wednesday, while coastal parts can receive moderate rainfall,” said S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre.
In the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, Chennai received 10.0 mm of rainfall, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam witnessing13.2 mm and 26.1mm of rainfall respectively. MET department has further said that heavy to moderate rainfall can continue on Tuesday before any major significant weather occurs. The occasional short spells received on Monday did not lead to major disruptions to normal life. While water receded from main roads in the city, many localities in Madipakkam, Mudichur, Perungalathur and other low lying areas are still awaiting relief measures to clear rainwater. Power supply was maintained regularly even in suburban areas on Monday, train and rail services were also operated as per schedule.
Regional Meteorological Centre forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai districts of North coastal Tamil Nadu, South Tamil Nadu and over Karaikal area in next 24 hours. Occasional spells of rains were likely to occur in Chennai.
