In his view, the government needs to first improve the city's public transport system to help people leave their vehicles at home.

Hyderabad: The Union road transport ministry has issued fresh orders to instal tracking devices and emergency buttons in all public transport vehicles. A similar order passed in 2016 was largely not implemented due to technical issues.

The Centre has now stated that all vehicles that will be going from January 1 should be fitted with the devices.

The ministry was earlier told that there were difficulties in implementing the vehicle location tracking device (VLT) and panic buttons due to a lack of command and control centres to monitor and track the vehicles.

To remedy this situation, the Centre said states could take the services of VLT device manufacturers till they set up their own backend systems. The states have to decide the timeline of implementation for vehicles registered upto Dec. 31, 2018. Given the latest orders from the Centre, the state’s transport dept. has started taking steps towards the move.

Joint transport commissioner C. Ramesh said that the dept. was ensuring that all public vehicles which come for registration are enabled with vehicle tracking system.
