Coimbatore: A 19-year-old college student lost his hearing ability after a policeman allegedly slapped him for riding triple on a motor cycle in the suburbs of Coimbatore.
According to a police source, Dinesh 18, a student of a private college and living near Nallampalayam in the suburbs of Coimbatore, was heading to Thondamuthoor on Tuesday evening with his friends Midhun, 19, and another friend. Thondamuthoor police who were involved in a routine vehicle check stopped the youths for riding triple.
One policeman asked the youths to come to the police station along with the bike. When Midhun moved the bike to take along with them to the police station, sub inspector Madhavan misunderstood him and slapped him over his right ear. Midhun cried and fell down.
His friends were shocked to see blood oozing out of his right ear, and rushed him to the Thondamuthoor government hospital, where he was given first aid and sent to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Sub inspector Madhavan imposed a fine on them, demanding that they pay the amount in the court.
He told DC that the students were trying to move away from the spot. They were fined for riding triple and they had no driving licence, helmet, insurance and RC book. They are trying to divert the case, he added. Sources said that police were trying to negotiate with students and so far, no departmental action has been taken against the SI.
