Chennai: Wood chipper machines to clear coconut trees

Chennai: Owing to the pressing need for clearing the fallen trees in the Gaja-affected districts to help farmers take up cultivation again, the State government has sanctioned Rs 760 lakh for purchasing wood chipper machines and other equipment required to clear the uprooted coconut trees.
Farmers in the delta districts, especially Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai have been the worst affected due to cyclone Gaja which pounded the coastal districts on November 16 uprooting thousands of coconut trees. As the coconut growers have been finding it difficult to remove the trees and take up cultivation, the State government has proposed to purchase 500 heavy duty chainsaws, 20 wood chipper machines, and equal number of winch machines, besides wood splitter machines, shredder cum pulverisers for Rs 760 lakh.
