Saudia plans more flights from Karipur
More wide-bodied aircraft will operate from Calicut International Airport in the Gulf sector to tap its potential to its maximum, Saudi Airlines said here on Thursday.
Moves are already afoot to explore the possibilities and other procedures to rope in more aircraft, the Saudi flag carrier said in a statement.
The wide-bodied aircraft resumed operations in the sector after a long interval on Wednesday.
Kozhikode MP M.K. Raghavan said that Air India also would press into service more wide-bodied aircraft in the sector soon.
"Talks are on with the officials who have already started procedural steps to resume the flights," he said. "I am sure they will not allow other airlines to take the benefit of monopolising in a lucrative sector."
The Saudia flight with 211 passengers onboard was accorded a warm welcome when it landed at the airport in Karipur.
The Jeddah-Kozhikode flight landed here on 11.10 am and received customary water salute.
It has brought back its seven services to the national capital of Riyadh and the port city of Jeddah, which were operating from Cochin International Airport since the runway closed partially for recarpeting three years back.
Of the seven services, four will be on Karipur-Jeddah sector and three on Karipur-Riyadh sector. With the resumption of direct services to the Gulf where 1.2 million people from the Malabar region work the number of passengers from Karipur is set to increase.
