Belagavi: Film producer Anand Appugol back in custody
Appugol was accused of failing to return more than Rs 250 crore he owed to customers.
Belagavi: A few weeks after he was granted bail in a cheating case, film producer and Chairman of Sangolli Rayanna Cooperative Society Anand Appugol was once again remanded to judicial custody by a local court in Belagavi on Wednesday.
The bail application filed by Appugol on Wednesday has been adjourned for Thursday. Appugol was accused of failing to return more than Rs 250 crore he owed to customers. He had closed down all branches of his society.
He was absconding for several weeks after cheating the customers, but a month ago he was tracked at his friend's house in Mumbai by Belagavi police.
The current custody is over a private complaint filed in Belagavi District Sessions Court by Nana Desai, who had deposited Rs 1.42 crore in Sangolli Rayannna Society and another Gajraj Cooperative Society, also owned by Appugol
To prevent Appugol from staying absent during court proceedings, the judge had directed the police officials to produce Appugol before the court without fail, considering the seriousness of his crime.
After coming out on bail, Appugol did not take any initiative to pay the dues of his customers and was instead leading a luxurious life. Appugol had reportedly used the society money to buy 109 properties at various places of the state in the last two decades. He also pumped lots of funds into film production and achieved popularity after his Kannada film, Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna turned into a big box-office hit.
