14 hurt in jallikattu near Namakkal

On the occasion of Kanuma festival, Jallikattu is celebrated in many parts of Chittoor district. The organisers had not even cared about the warnings given by the police.

Namakkal: As many as 14 bull-tamers were injured in a jallikattu event near Senthamangalam near here on Saturday.

State Electricity minister, P Thangamani and Social Welfare minister, Ms. V Saroja inaugurated the bull fight sport at Devarayapuram village near Erumapatti in the presence of  Namakkal district collector M Asia Mariam. 

As many as 357 bulls from various districts including Salem, Tiruchy, Perambalur and Pudukkottai took part in the event. In all, 249 bull-tamers participated in the nearly day-long sport.

The injured bull tamers were given first aid at the venue itself and some of the more seriously injured among them were later shifted to the Namakkal government hospital.  

The winners took prizes like sofa, cot, mixer, kitchen ware, gold coins, silver ornaments and chairs. Some  bull owners also received prizes, as their bulls were untamed.
