KOCHI: The fledgling outpatient (OP) wing of the Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) is set to have a major facelift next month when a mammogram unit will be installed there which will be a major facility for early breast cancer detection. The unit will be set up spending Rs 1.5 crore which has been given by C P Narayanan from his MP funds at the instance of former MP P Rajeev. With Dr Moni Kuriakose assuming charge as the director of CCRC early this month, both development of the out-patient wing and the preliminary works of setting up an own building have got momentum. District collector and special officer Muhammed K Safirulla also is taking keen interest in this regard.
When contacted CCRC medical superintendent Dr P G Balagopal said that the mammogram will be installed after getting clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. "KMSCL is purchasing the mammogram. In the light of the increased incidence of breast cancer cases in the state, the unit will be a boon for those from the lower strata of society in the Central Kerala region," Dr Balagopal said
The operation theatre of CCRC which is being set up at Ernakulam Government Medical College also will become functional in a couple of weeks. Dr Moni has already met principal and medical superintendent of EMC and held discussions in this regard. Some of the instruments purchased by KMSCL for the operation theatre have been already been installed while some more are set to come.
