Ooty: The May spell of summer showers has begun with a bang here in the hills,  helping the hills to cool and flora to turn more verdant.

The dry weather that continued since January came to an end by mid-April, when summer showers, though late this year, began to pound the hills. While the hills recorded a little over 100 mm of rain in April, for the past one week there was a lull as there was hardly any rain. But from Monday onwards, the May spell of summer showers began that saw this hill town receiving good precipitation for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

Horticulture department officials who are preparing the Government Botanical Garden in Ooty for the annual flower show next weekend, heaved a sigh of relief as the rains will help to keep the garden in good bloom for the next couple of weeks at least.

The precipitation is expected to rejuvenate the tea gardens in a big way to trigger a good tea yield across the hills.
