Chennai: Gold seized by customs

During a search of her handbag gold was recovered.

Chennai: The customs sleuths at the city airport on Tuesday seized gold worth Rs 41.65 lakh.

On Tuesday morning, the customs officials intercepted Syed Ali Fathima (45) of Ramanathapuram, who had arrived from Colombo by Sri Lankan airlines flight. During a search of her handbag gold was recovered. On extraction 74 grams gold valued at  Rs 2.42 lakh was recovered and the same was seized under the Customs Act, 1962.

Further,  Makayla Rajani( 45) of Cuddapahin and Saraswathi (38)  of YSR  of Andhra Pradesh who had arrived from by Gulf Air flight were intercepted by AIU officers at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold.

On their personal search, 4 gold cut bars and one semi-finished gold chain weighing 997 grams and valued at ` 32.52 lakh were recovered.

On Monday night,  officers intercepted  Lakshmi( 53) of Dindigul, who had arrived from Colombo by Indigo Airlines flight. In all, 206 grams gold valued at `6.72 lakh was recovered from her rectum.

Total 1.27 kg gold valued at `41.66 lakh was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under progress.
