Bengaluru: Senior BJP leader, Basavangowda Patil Yatnal openly confessed on Tuesday to eyeing the post of  the party's state unit president. Speaking to reporters  here, he said, "B.S.Yeddyurappa is our leader and also our Chief Ministerial candidate , but after him, I will become party president."

Mr. Yatnal's statement comes amidst the buzz about the party's intentions to change its state president after the Lok Sabha results are announced. With many senior and young leaders lining up for the post, Mr. Yatnal appears to have decided it was time he staked his claim as well.

The BJP's central leadership is reportedly in favour of introducing changes in the party's organisational set- up including its president's post. Considering how old Mr Yeddyurappa is, the choice could fall on a younger person, according to sources.

In 2007, Mr. Yatnal was one of the strongest contenders  for the post and had the backing of  the late Union minister, Ananth Kumar, but Mr. Yeddyurappa was keen on  Mr D.V. Sadananda Gowda for it.
