Tidal waves touch houses along coast in Chennai

Chennai: Following heavy rains and rough sea conditions, normal life was hit along the Chennai coast on Tuesday.

A few concrete houses also suffered waterlogging with the seawater failing to recede. Several fishermen returned to their houses later in the day and spent their evening removing the silt.
“The sea had been rough since Monday and most of us have decided not to venture in to sea till Thursday. Rough waves also forced us to translocate television sets, beds and kitchen utensils to nearby houses,” said K. Kumaran, a local fisherman of Sreenivasapuram Kuppam, Foreshore Estate.
Corporation officials, who inspected the spot, also assured temporary shelters for fishermen of Sreenivasapuram and advised them to stay away from houses that are hit by tidal waves. Meanwhile, Chennai recorded rainfall for the second consecutive day with Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram district recording showers till late in the evening.
Bordering areas of Greater Chennai including Tiruttani, Tiruvallur, Tambaram, Sriperumbudur received good rainfall. Traffic flow was affected in parts of
south and north Chennai due to intermittent rains with motorists taking cover under flyovers and metro rail structures.
“Afternoons in Chennai were too hot and rains are a welcome relief. Hope the showers continues for the next few days,” said K. Aishwarya, a call centre employee in Adyar.
Regional Meteorological Centre here said the sky condition will be partly cloudy with possibility of rain or thunder showers in some areas during evening or night for the next 48 hours. Maximum and Minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 and 27 deg Celsius, the weather office said.
In a warning bulletin to fishermen the weather office said strong winds from south westerly direction speed occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph was likely along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. However, there was no warning for fishermen along Andhra coast.
