Telangana: Unsafe water worries people
Poor drinking water oversight could have serious public health implications'.
Hyderabad: The drinking water from the city’s two main sources — the Krishna and Godavari rivers — have been consistently of a low quality, complain residents of several areas in the city. The water has been reported to be yellowish, smelly and containing solid particles, said Mr Raghavendra, a resident of East Kalyanpuri that has been receiving polluted water for months.
“There are several families residing in our locality and we are facing severe health issues due to polluted water supply, mainly because of rusted water pipeline. We raised several complaints with Beerappagadda, Uppal Waterworks Department. But there is no response. Due to the rusted pipeline, the water that we get is yellowish brown or red in colour and unfit to be used.” “We are now purchasing water cans from vendors. This has been the situation for over two years and nothing has been done about the issue. Whenever a complaint has been raised, the ticket is closed as ‘resolved’. My recent complaint stated as “work is in progress. but not an inch of work has been done. This is the most irresponsible department closing the complaints as resolved without working on it.”
Another complainant Mr Mujtaba Ahmed from Bahadurpura added, “Drainage water is getting mixed with tap water for the last 3 months. We contacted the Hyderabad waterworks office but the issue has not been resolved.” “The water board has written to the state government to allocate funds for the new pipeline; the proposal is under consideration”, said a senior officer with HMWSSB. In many areas, consumers receive water with turbidity, smell and hardness.
